A note from the Director

I am thrilled to announce that the first phase of the "new found home" project of the MofAc is now complete and the museum has been open since February. The opening ceremony and the ribbon cutting was attended by over 125 people, friends, and well wishers of the museum despite the falling snow that evening. This event has been followed by two art openings (Daniel Minter and Sean Harris) and the play reading by Victoria Mares-Hershey  "How Did You Get Here". We have had hundreds of students come through for programs and several adult programs, all of which have highlighted this wonderful space designed by Mr. Stephen Oliver.

Our new space has now given birth to new board leadership, dedicated to our mission of education, preservation and the celebration of diversity through the use of art, music, films, drumming, story telling, healing and discussion forums. Our vision is to continue bringing light  to our community and reach many more audiences in Maine, Northern New England and beyond.

Our World-Class collection of masks and artifacts has continued to excite our visitors and is now complimented by our contemporary art exhibitions showcasing local African and African American artists.

On behalf of the board of trustees and our advisory board I wish to thank all of you who have made this possible through your generous gifts of time, materials, and money.

The museum is now located in the fabulous Kimball Court building one block from the Monument Square in Portland's art district, with lots of exciting new program for all ages. Please come and immerse yourself in the experience of African art, and feel the power the art communicates to you, and celebrate this wonderful community gift.

Thank you very much

Chief. Oscar O Mokeme
Museum Director.

Artist's Statement – Alva Lowe

Since the mid 1970s my work with wood has been an expression of the
influence of my Jamaican roots.  I came to the United States as a teenager and found myself longing for the life I had left behind me.  I began carving abstract likenesses of the people who had filled my youth.  Over the years my representations were more influenced by the very presence of the spirit with in the wood
